Steve, you need to make it to Cal State Fullerton tonight! El Toro and El Dorado play for the Hard 9 National Classic Title at 7:15. I've been to all 3 El Toro games this week and tonight should be a great battle!

Really sorry I couldn't make it out to the game at Fullerton .. had a seminar out in the inland empire which was previously scheduled for tonight... El Toro is on of the top schools in the state and should get a very high rating in the nation at the end of this season.

I visited with some young athletes tonight and was pleasantly surprised by their enthusiasm in their response to college in their future. I'ts so nice to know that the young 8th and 9th graders are thinking ahead of themselves towards their college years. Great input by their parents as well. Using the Book Make the play of your life as a guideline really gave them a map for their future... lots of fun with this group! So much talent coming up in the future..

I was at a seminar today with a number of athletes I believe we had baseball, football, soccer both girls and guys, Lacross, tennis and swimmers represented. I really had to impress upon the parents that getting together with the freshmen and sophomores was very important.. especially since they still have time to arrange their classes... It was quite exciting and we all had so much fun. Folks get your teams together and lets get everyone prepared for the college experience!!

Steve- can you explain the NCAA Clearing House to the readers. What is, when does it need to be done, etc.
Also, since I went to your seminar and since the time I've known you, you have stressed the importance of grades. I have been talking to a lot of parents of junior and senior athletes that are now finding a lot of disappoint when speaking with college coaches and recruiters about their sons or daughter's GPA and SAT scores.
Last question- when can a school start to make contact with an athlete either by phone or email?

Great Pat... the NCAA Clearinghouse Qualification is a core of 16 or 14 classes that are required in order to attend a division I or II university out of High School. Should be done immediately going into HS.
The grades you have in high school is very important in accordance to what your SAT or ACT scores are... the only advice I can give in a sentence is this.... it's easier to get good grades in your everyday classes then to hope you score well on the SAT or ACT.
As far as when a school can contact you... anytime. They can't offer you a visit until the end of your Junior year in most cases. These are usually an exceptional circumstances, usually just before the start of your senior year of the sport they want you to play at their school. Trust me students have a lot of contact with recruiters that coaches and administrators have know knowledge of.

Steve- I know a lot of players end up playing at the JC level to get their grades up or hope to sharpen their skills and catch the eye of some D1 coaches. Is this the best route to go for plsyers that don't have the grades when they get out of high school?

Yes it is....Unfortunately this is the route for those students that are struggeling with their grades. One must know what the interpretation of bad grades are Ds and Fs. There a tons of schools that student athletes may attend with a "C" average. The Jr. College is truly for those athletes that want to take a short path to professional sports.. Be aware of what college credits are transferrable to the next level of school

In your seminar I attended you were talking about the new standards that the Calfornia college schools were going to be under starting next year which will require higher standards than before for schools like UCLA, Fulleton, UC Santa Barbara, Cal. and a number of othet schools, can you tell us more about that.
