Watched a freshman game and a few innings of a varsity game yesterday. Overall, I think there was some pretty good play at both levels. First games I have seen in 3-4 months so it sure felt good to get out there. I believe there's a tournament next weekend in San Diego that I'll probably be going to. It will give me an opportunity to get some new photos.
The one thing that did stick out is the player's inability to get a bunt down. There was 4-5 times in the freshman game when the hitter couldn't get a bunt down. A couple of times they bunted with two strikes and still couldn't get the ball in play after 3 attempts.

Here is my interview with Cory Hahn-
OCHSBB I have read that one of your baseball role models is former Angels player Darin Erstad. What was it about Erstad that you most admired? I most admire that Erstad was one of the hardest workers on and off the field, how mentally tough he is, and how he played the game. He went 100% all out and gave it everything he had every single game. OCHSBB Besides Erstad, are there any other past or current players that you admire or look up to? Yes, Dustin Pedroia and my current favorite player and idol Josh Hamilton. OCHSBB About what age were you when you figured out that baseball was the game for you? I have always wanted to be a big leaguer, and realized I had the potential to make it when I was about 13 years old. OCHSBB You seem to have a special relationship with Coach Call at Mater Dei. What are some of the things you picked up from Coach Call on and off the field? Yes, I could not have a better relationship with Coach Call; he is a mentor to me. Off the field he has illustrated to be humble and professional at all times, as people are always watching. On the field I have learned to always go hard regardless of the outcome and to always be there for my teammates as we win and lose as a team. I could not have asked for a better coach then Burt Call.
OCHSBB In 2010 you won just about every major high school award, is there one special game or moment that stands out for you? The moment that stands out the most is the CIF championship that we won, as that had been my goal every year and we had such a special team. All the awards were just a bonus for me, as we as a team captured the one award that means the most, and to have the opportunity to bring that CIF trophy to Mater Dei is very special to me, everyone will always remember the 2010 Monarchs were CIF champions. OCHSBB People want to know how your recovery is going, how often do you go to physical therapy? What does it consist of?
I go to therapy Monday – Friday, it consists of a lot of hard both in strength and conditioning as well as working on getting my legs moving thru treadmills and muscle stimulation. Combining both types of therapy makes for a pretty exhausting workout but I have the motivation to work until I succeed in my recovery
OCHSBB What can you do today that you couldn’t do 2-3 months ago? I can now transfer myself onto couches, into cars etc. on my own which is a huge accomplishment for me. I have become a little more independent now and I am even learning to drive again. OCHSBB You seem to be a student of the game, a tireless worker and a person with great inner drive. Where do you see yourself one year from today? Ultimately I hope to be walking again in a year but I hope to be able to pass on the knowledge I have about the game both with hitting and defense to my teammates at Arizona State University, as well as young ball players all around.
OCHSBB There are hundreds of kids in the LA/Orange County area that someday want to be the kind of player Cory Hahn was. What would you tell these kids it takes to have the type of season you had in 2010 and then go on and get a scholarship at one of the top baseball universities in the country? I would tell all those young kids you have to love and respect the game of baseball, then to work as hard as you can everyday and to strive to get better every time you get on the field. To realize you can not take days off and to hate to lose more than you like to win! With all this in mind the most important thing is to always remember to have fun! OCHSBB How do you feel about doing some coaching? Maybe give hitting lessons to the hundreds of kids now playing travel ball? As I mentioned earlier I would love to get into coaching of some sort, I want to be able to help kids in any way I can to achieve their dreams, goals and I feel I have a great amount of knowledge about baseball to help these kids get better. OCHSBB I’ve read about the new “Cory Hahn Model” bat made by Trinity. How were you involved in that process? To be honest I had no involvement in the process, Trinity Bats surprised me with the idea they had and I was humbled and honored that they wanted to do this for me and my recovery. These guys at Trinity Bats are the best!
OCHSBB And the last question- what words of advice do you have for players playing high school ball today? To always have fun and give it everything you got every day. We cannot control the outcome of success but we can control how we play and how hard we work. Enjoy the game because baseball is the greatest sport around

So glad I went to the Trinity Bat Home Run Derby today. Great event with at least 500-600 people there. El Dorado High School's baseball field is one of the best around. It compares with a lot of college fields I've seen. So glad they were able to hold the event given all the rain last night. The field was in great shape and it was obvious they were prepared for the rain. We watched about 12 -15 different high school players in the HR contest for about 3 hours. The wind was blowing in from left field and that held some balls up from going out. It's only 310 down the left field line, but the power alley in left center is 360.
There are trees behind the fence all around and they must be at least 50 feet high. I sat in amazement as these kids BLASTED AND BOMBED balls over the trees-into the wind! I wish I could remember all of their names, I'll get the list and post it here. The most amazing feat was turned in by Ty Moore from Mater Dei. Moore hit 11 home runs in the championship round. They were a combination of high majestic blasts and laser like line drives into the trees. This kid takes a swing at a ball like I've never seen before!! If you get a chance to watch Ty Moore play this year, you need to just do it!

Saw some great games Saturday when Mater Dei came to El Toro for a doubleheader. The teams split the games with Mater Dei winning the first and El Toro coming back to win the second game. Mater Dei has a boat load of pitching, it seemed like everyone they put out there was throwing BB's! Ty Moore had the best curve ball I have ever seen, not only did it drop off the table, it dropped off the table and went through the floor! You have to make it a point to see this guy play this year. You can see in my post above that the guy can hit the ball a ton. He took some cuts Saturday that would of put me in the hospital had I tried to swing that hard! Mater Dei also has Austin Grebeck who is a Junior centerfielder. Austin is the son of Craig Grebeck, a 12 year Major League player and without a doubt the best hitting coach I have ever seen. Austin just has tremendous speed in the outfield and covers a lot of ground out there. He chased down some balls Saturday that I never thought he would get to. The kid also has a rocket for an arm. I took a couple hundred photos Saturday at the games; most of them were of the players hitting. I was amazed at the bat speed of Gavin Collins. There were several times when I thought a fastball was by him and he swung and crushed the ball to left field. His bat gets through the strike zone faster than any player I've taken pictures of and I've taken several thousand photos of players hitting. Logan Roberts from El Toro was a close second- extremely quick bat through the zone. Saturday was a great day! I mean, it was 82 degrees out and I get to watch baseball in January. Growing up in Michigan you don't believe things like that ever happen!

I was at the El Toro varsity vs Gahr today and had a conversation with a very interesting guy that I saw standing around with a pad of paper and some folders. He approached me and asked me the name of the guy on the mound. I told him and then he asked if my son was out there and I said yes he was at 2nd base. The gentlemen's name is Steve Daguio and he is in the business of helping high school atheletes and their parents navigate their way through the recruiting process and much more. We probablt talked for about 20 minutes before Steve had to head off to another field to watch some more games. Steve told me about how his two sons got college scholarships, but when they were in high school he didn't have a clue of how the process worked. Well, now Steve is an expert and travels the country helping families in all sports. He agreed to let me do an interview with him and ask him some questions that I can post on the site. Check out Steve's website at- www.Maketheplayofyourlife.com I think you'll find it very helpful!

A couple of days ago I had a discussion with a group of dads about hitting coaches. Should you take your son to one? Is it worth the money? What if he teaches them something different than what you've always taught him? Is the high school coach ok with it? What makes a good hitting coach? How often should you go? How much does it cost?
Personally, I think it's great if you find the right one. And for me the best one I have ever seen is Craig Grebeck at BPA. Craig played 12 years in the Majors. My son was lucky enough to play for Craig for about 6 months and not only did my son learn a lot about hitting, I did too! (and I thought I knew everything about it) Craig is very booked and it's difficult to schdule a time slot with him, but if you're serious about hitting Craig is the best guy around to spend your time and money on.

Ok Steve, have a safe trip and hope you find some good prospects out there. Bring your camera on your travels and send me some pictures of some top players and I'll get them on the site.
